Brown Bear Hunts - Unit 16B

We offer Spring and Fall brown bear hunts in Unit 16B.  There are two many brown bears in Unit 16B, the limit has gone from 1 brown bear every 4 years to two brown bears a year to try and get the numbers down.

Guided Brown Bear Hunts

We offer one-on-one brown bear hunts out of our Shulin Lake cabin. This area is on the border of unit 16 A & B. There are so many brown bears in unit 16 B that the limit has gone from 1 bear every 4 years to two bears a year to try to get the numbers down. This cabin has propane heat, refrigerator and stove.  There is also running hot and cold water, and even a shower.  We have a generator for electric and even a TV with a DVD player for your entertainment after a long day of hunting.  We pick you up in Anchorage and fly you from Willow into camp and return you to Anchorage afterwards.  All flying to and from the hunting area is included in the price of the hunt.  This price includes all meals, guide fees, and equipment.  The only thing not included in the hunt is your airfare to Anchorage, hunting license, personal gear, and gratuities.  In early spring, we use snowmobiles and snowshoes to get to areas where we glass for new dens opening up and fresh tracks.  Later in the spring and in the early fall, we use ATV’s and jet boats to get to areas along rivers and streams to watch for feeding bears.   We kill bears in this area anywhere from 7ft. to well over 9ft.  The price of this hunt includes the trophy fee for one brown bear and one black bear. Additional bears may be harvested, up to your limit, for a trophy fee of $2500 for brown bear and $500 for black bear.  In the fall this hunt can be combined with great Silver Salmon and Rainbow fishing.

Cost:   1 x 1 - $9995.00 – 10 days fully guided and outfitted, all meals included

SPRING BROWN BEAR HUNTS ON SNOW

Willow Air will be offering early spring brown bear hunts. This si my favorite way to hunt brown bears as you can cover large areas and look for big bears. Hutners will stay at our Shulin Lake Cabin and hunt from snowmobiles in the area around the Kahiltna River and the Yenlo and Peters hills. This cabin is very comfortable with hear, full kitchen, generator, bush phone, and DVD player. Unti 16 has been made a Predator Control area by Fish and Game due to its overpopulation of bears. The bag limit for brown bears went from one bear every 4 years to one bear a year and now is 2 brown bears a year in an attempt to get the bear numbers down. We used to have one guide-use area to hunt brown bears in unit 16, however, now since it is a predator control area we are able to hunt bears in all 5 guide-use areas which is hundreds of square miles. While the hunter and guide are hunting on snowmobiles we will be flying with a Supercub looking for fresh dens and kills.

Willow Air has 3 Piper Supercubs that are available in spring bear season so have access to airplanes whenever we need them. A lot of outfitters have to hire airplanes to do their flying so when the weather is good the airplane might not be available and the cost of hiring flying makes it too expensive for them to fly and look for bears much. Until our clients have killed their bears we will be in the air looking for bears whenever the weather permits with at least one plane and sometimes two.

You will be on a 1x1 hunt but many days you will have 2 guides working for you, one guide with you hunting while another is flying looking for bears. We have done spring bear hunts in the past where I estimated we did $25,000 in flying for a $10,000 hunt. If you hire out the flying you can't do that. Our main goal is getting you your bear and we will spend the hours flying if that is what it takes. When we find a big bear on a den or kill we will pick you and your guide up and drop you as close as possible with a tent and survival gear. By Alaska law you cannot shoot the same day you have flown so you will spend the night and snowshoe to the bear the next day. The guide will have a satellite phone and call the next day for a pickup; if you did not get the bear we will start looking for another one.

This hunt is very physically demanding so you must be in shape. Unit 16 bears do not get as big as the monsters on the Alaska Peninsula or Kodiak Island, but those 10ft.+ bear there are few and far between. No mater what you hear, the average bear on the Peninsula or Kodiak is about 8ft. We have killed bears in Unit 16 right at 10ft., but the average bear we kill on these snow hunts is bigger than the average bear on the Peninsula or Kodiak due to the the fact we are flying and looking gor the big bears. We average about 8 ½ft. With bears over 9ft. Not uncommon at all. This hunt is not cheap but is a bargain with all the flying we do. There is also no additional air charter cost to you, we pick you up in Anchorage and take you back after your hunt is over. This is a 12 day schedule with day 1 and day 12 being fly days in and out of the camp and 10 full days of hunting.

Hunt dates April 4-15 or April 15-26.
Cost: $12,500 - 12 Days (10 full days of 1 x 1 hunting).

Baited Black Bear Hunts

We now offer a baited black bear hunt in Unit 16.  There are far too many bears in Unit 16 and Fish & Game has liberalized the seasons and bag limits.  The season is now year-round and the bag limit is three per person.  This is a two-on-one (2 x 1) guided hunt.  This is a great father-son hunt, a hunt for two hunters that have hunted together quite a bit.  You must have your own partner; we do not put groups together for our 2 x 1 hunts.  This hunt is fully outfitted with all meals included.  We will pick you up in Anchorage and fly you to the Shulin Lake cabin.  There are no additional transportation costs.  There are lots of black bears and some very big ones if you are able to pass some up and wait for the big one.  This hunt is a five-day/six-night trip between May 10 - June 10.

Cost:  2 x 1 - $2500.00 per person.  This includes the trophy fee on your first bear.  Trophy fee for each additional bear is $500.00.  Additional costs include hunting license, tags and guide tips.

Baited Black Bear/Salmon Combo

This hunt is a combination of our baited  black bear hunt and our Peter's Creek Outpost salmon fishing.  You'll fish for king salmon by day, and hunt black bear in the evening.  This hunt is 5 day/6 nights and will be scheduled between June  10 - 30.

Cost:  $3995.00 per person
