2011 Hunting Update

Another Banner Year for Moose and Brown Bear

We had another great year. We had two brown bear hunters this fall. Eric Vaillancourt was our first hunter and he harvested a nice 8 ft bear with a bow after seeing over 25 bears. Then Joseph Nicosia harvested two brown bears, one well over 8 ft after six days of hunting. We have been over 100% on brown bear for the past three years. Last season (2010) was our best year ever for moose in Western Alaska, until this past season. We had an even better year in 2011. All our groups, except one float group and one fixed camp group, harvested a moose. All the successful groups got at least one bull and most groups actually tagged out. Our overall success was 77% with our boat and motor hunts doing slightly better than our float hunts.

The Innoko Wildlife Refuge is divided into 3 exclusive guide-use areas. We were awarded one of these areas on the lower part of the Innoko 2 years ago. We have just been awarded the other 2 exclusive guide-use areas beginning in 2012, making us the only guide on the entire refuge which is 3,850,000 acres or approx. 6000 square miles. This is the first time since the refuge was established that one guide has had the entire refuge. This area has some of the best moose hunting country that Alaska has to offer. This country is extremely remote and we are very fortunate to have an exclusive in this area. This should make our guided hunts this year some of the best Alaska has to offer.

We also had another great fishing season out of our Peters Creek cabin. The runs were very strong. Look for us on Larry Csonka’s show North to Alaska. He was at Peters Creek in June fishing for Kings and went with us to Alexander Lake to fish for Northern Pike.  These shows are scheduled to air January 22 and 29, 2012 on the Versus Network, just in time for you to book a fishing trip for this summer.
