Processing Your Meat and Trophies

There is no longer a meat processor in McGrath. If you are on a hunt where we are able to pick up your moose before you come out of the field, we will hang your moose in a screened-in tent in McGrath. We will give you instructions in McGrath on how to care for your meat in camp until we can get there to pick it up. When Northern Air Cargo (NAC) comes in, we can ship it to one of the processors in Anchorage. They will pick it up, process and freeze it, and ship it for you to your home. We also have a list of people in McGrath that would be happy to take any meat you wish to donate to them. There is no processing fee on meat you donate.

The best way to ship antlers home is to cut on antler off at the base and box them up and mail them home USPS. Your taxidermist can make that antler removable on your trophy which helps make it easier to get through doors. If you want to keep the antlers intact, you can sometimes take them back on the airlines with you (this changes from year to year and is on a space available basis) or they can be sent on NAC to an expeditor in Anchorage and they will ship them to you.

If you want to keep the cape, the best way is to flesh it in the field, split the lips and nose, and turn the ears, and salt & dry it all. This is a complicated and time consuming process and I recommend you practice on some game at home before your hunt. The other option is to try and get the cape out fresh. We will try to find someone in McGrath to freeze your cape until you come out of the bush, or send it to a processor in Anchorage for freezing and shipping. It can also be sent to an expeditor for fleshing and shipped to your taxidermist. Another option is to have the cape tanned in Anchorage and shipped to your or your taxidermist.

Please do research on your options before coming to McGrath and arrive with phone numbers and addresses back home for your taxidermist and where meat, cape and horns should be shipped. I’m sure you understand some of these options are significantly more expensive than others and these are decisions that should be made before arriving for your hunt.
